What Type Of Estuary Is The Tamaki Area?
The Tāmaki River or Tāmaki Estuary is mostly an estuarial arm and harbour of the Hauraki Gulf, within the city of Auckland in New Zealand. It extends south for 15 kilometres (9 mi) from its mouth between the suburb of Saint Heliers and the long thin peninsula of Bucklands Beach, which reaches its end at Musick Point.
When Did The Tamaki Area Get Its Name?
Tāmaki Makaurau derives its name from the Māori-language name for Auckland, meaning “Tāmaki desired by many”, in reference to the desirability of its natural resources and geography. Tāmaki Makaurau was formed for the 2002 election from the northern part of the Hauraki electorate.
Tāmaki had a population of 4,263 at the 2001 census.
To the west of the suburb is Mount Wellington, a 137-metre volcanic peak which is part of the Auckland Volcanic Field, and which was formed by an eruption around 9,000 years ago.
The suburb is between the suburbs of Point England to the north and Panmure to the south.
